Virginia Textbook Claims 'Thousands' of Blacks Fought for South

(Oct. 20) -- A claim in a new fourth-grade textbook used in Virginia public schools that "thousands" of blacks fought for the Confederate Army during the Civil War has scholars up in arms. The Washington Post reports that the Virginia Department of Education is warning its educators to avoid a single sentence in the textbook "Our Virginia: Past and Present," by Joy Masoff: "Thousands of Southern blacks fought in the Confederate ranks, including two black battalions under the command of Stonewall Jackson."
